Whether you’re trying to start a business, write a book, or finish your thesis, you might find it difficult at times to get things finished… or even started.

Most of us have been taught that the only way to see projects through to completion is through willpower, discipline, and perseverance.

But none of these methods work.

Because none of these methods get to the root of the procrastination problem.

They may push you to take action in the short-term, but they’ll never work long-term because they’re all aimed at coercing you to do something you don’t naturally want to do.

The system I’m going to teach you is based on a simple principle:

Small tasks that lead to immediate payoffs turn on the REWARD CIRCUIT in your brain. Know that feeling you got as a child on Christmas morning? The excitement right before you go on a trip? Seeing an email from your friend in your inbox?

This is a state humans love to be in. And this “get work done” system will naturally leverage those great feelings to help you accomplish your goals.

Bio

Zach Browman has trained as an actor, lived
as a Buddhist monk, and worked as a
matchmaker and a dating a coach. At 36, after
a lifetime of chronic procrastination, he hit
upon a discovery that turned him into a
productive and prolific writer, virtually
over night. He’s now in the process of
completing a book on the subject of
procrastination, and is thrilled to be
presenting his system to a larger audience
for the first time here at the Beaumont.

yoga + live music with the spaces and place
for this week, feb 16th, bring a friend for free!
drop in $10
for more information: the.b.space@gmail.com or call 778. 239. 9600

naomi and jeremy, of spaces and places yoga are sweet you on this week! come bring a friend and practice yoga to live music: jeremy plays guitar through numerous effected treatments and loops, creating something akin to blending Ataxia, Neu!, and Dr. Dre’s instrumentals, while naomi teaches ashtanga-inspired class. the two aspects of their yoga space make for a unique, mind-stretching workout.
“Jeremy Price Jones delivers some of the most original and interesting performances, which are different every week at yoga. It’s a good combination of tasteful guitar licks and deep guitar melodies with a hint of electronic influence. Interesting what someone can do with a handful of looper pedals and a synth. A true innovator.” says Ryan Enockson, Vancouver-based musician and producer.
“Yoga + music is much more than the sum of its parts. both Naomi and Jeremy are perceptive and responsive, and allow the dynamic of the class to happen organically. their practice combines the grounding work of yoga with the subtle stimulation and cocooning effect of live music to make something that is ultimately a fun, rewarding, and collaborative experience.” says kaia ccott, practitioner of yoga.
the spaces and places live music + yoga is into their 4th month running at The Beaumont Artist Studios. classes are drop in, every Thursday, at 6pm-7:15pm and cost a suggested donation of $10. You can email the.b.space@gmail.com for more info or call 778. 238. 9600.

The Hip Hop workshop is an interactive class that deals with all aspects of the Hip Hop culture for both beginners and advanced students. Teaching everything from the history and background of the art and music to the business side of grants and record deals. It’s aimed to help people progress to the next level in whatever it is they do and at the same time sharpening all of our skills. Each week the class is hosted by local rap veteran Emotionz with guest performers and speakers touching on different topics.

We’ve broken down Hip Hop to an 8 Element curriculum that we follow: MC’ing, Graffiti, Bboying, DJ’ing, Beatboxing, Production [Beat making], The Grind and Character. This lay out gives everybody involved a chance to feel a part of the workshop and contribute in some way. Photographers, promoters, managers, website designers and anything that normally doesn’t get the recognition it should within Hip Hop falls under the category of “the Grind”.

We have rap trivia every week with prizes and giveaways plus some truly amazing breakdancing and freestyle cyphers. You can come participate or just watch as some of Vancouver’s best mc’s come off the head with freestyles and also share written works with each other. DJ’s get down on the turntables and producers bring in there beat machines and laptops to play new beats for the class to check out and sometimes rhyme on too. So many friendships, collaborations and music have already evolved from the class it’s exciting to think what lies ahead. If you wanna learn about the Hip Hop culture in a positive hands on environment come out any Sunday from 6-9pm and see what it’s all about!

* Every Sunday from 6-9pm @ Beaumont Studios [W.5th and Alberta] – Join the group and stay up to date http://www.facebook.com/groups/115701161827072/

Emotionz – 8 Elements of Hip Hop

Since the early 90′s when I started rapping, doing graffiti and beatboxing everyday I always felt like the standard 4 elements of Hip Hop didn’t sum up the whole picture. The original 4 elements in NYC were set as a foundation for the culture from the beginning, but over time I feel like we have to credit the people who are being left out of that description… So I re-wrote my own 8 elements to teach the students at my workshops from my own perspective.

1. Rap [Mc'ing]

Hip Hop is something you live and rap is something you do. Lots of people forget that simple lesson from the blastmaster KRS ONE. Rap music has always been the voice for the hip hop culture since the beginning. Now that it’s become a billion dollar industry obviously not all rap is gonna be related to hip hop but at it’s core it all comes from those project buildings in the Bronx where this culture all started. Rap started out with mc’s hosting over the DJ’s and eventually started writing originals and pressing them to vinyl. I bet if you added up the $ that rap music as a whole has generated since it started in the late 70′s it would be more then what microsoft has made! Beauty comes out of struggle. Mc’ing as an art now spans from spoken word poets in coffee shops, huge pop stars rapping in the studio, prison inmates rhyming over the phone, freestyle cyphers, battles and everything in between. Wordplay, flow, breath control, style, tone, voice, lyrics, song writing skill and originality make up this art we love known as “Rap”

2. DJ’s [Turntablism]

Since the beginning of Hip Hop the DJ has been the backbone of the party. It must have been crazy when they had to bring your own sound system to the gigs too. DJ’s are the disc jockeys or selecta’s of the music on the turntables. DJ Kool Herc put on the first hip hop jam in New York when he set up a whole sound rig with his turntables in the bronx and got everyone to come rock out. Originally from Kingston, Jamaica Herc had seen the sound clash battles back home where crews would go head to head with there own sound systems/speakers/music against other crews to see who was louder and better. He incorporated that into hip hop which probably became one of the reasons battling has been such a big part of the culture. He was also the first one to start spinning the breaks or his favorite parts of songs instead of the whole track. That made it so the bboys could dance to the best parts for longer and it also spawned the art of spinning doubles [2 of the same record on different turntables]. As time has progressed so have the DJ’s. From spinning a few good records back in the day to literally spinning around and doing crazy scratching tricks now. In the 90′s A sub-culture of DJ’ing was formed called “Turntablism” which focused more on the technical tricks, scratching, doubles and more intricate parts of DJ’ing. Modern day club DJ’ing is more focused on flawless mixes and playing the right songs at the right time. Never forget though DJ’ing still comes down to playing good music and making the people have fun in the party.

3.Graffiti

Graffiti was around a long time before Hip Hop. The actual act of graffiti is to deface a piece of property that isn’t yours so I’m sure thats been going on forever haha. The modern day hip hop graffiti that we see and know is comparable to hieroglyphics in ancient Egypt. Not that the content is as deep but in the sense of artists and people wanting to document there thoughts and artwork for other people to see and interpret. Of coarse there is lots of stupid vandalism and scribbles that don’t mean anything but when a graffiti artist or hip hop head see’s a tag they get something deeper. It can represent everything that artist thinks and does. Just a small signature on a park bench could put you in peoples minds all day? From people writing there name and street number on walls in the 1960′s this artform has came a long way. For a long time it was all about being all city or painting the most trains but in an ever changing and growing culture some people have moved on. Graffiti writers have opened worldwide galleries, done movies, started clothing lines, designed and marketed there own spray paint brands and even made video games. Some writers continue to illegally paint the city with bubble letters, tags and murals putting there own freedom on the line to make it a more colorful city!

4. Bboying [Breakdancing]

It’s hard to imagine but Hip Hop as a culture actually made some gangs in New York start battling in breakdancing instead of fighting and stabbing each other. They realized really fast that it was a lot more positive to dance and also a good way to get your pent up energy out. Probably meet a lot more girls when your not being violent all the time also haha. Bboying started out as a rhythmic routine of dancing that attacked or out shined your opponent to the beat. It quickly evolved to people doing a few freezes/moves on the floor and then next thing you know the bboys were doing crazy flips, headspins and windwills. Basically performing human movements that not even martial arts masters or gymnasts had done. Spinning around on any part of there body imaginable. Young kids with a lot of character and energy dancing there hearts out on cardboard boxes and the bricks of the city streets. Breakdancing went through a few really commercial stages that kinda killed out the fad for a while but the true bboys and dancers always remained part of the movement and kept dancing. Modern day bboying has developed so many sub genres and dances within it such as footwork, top rocks, popping and locking, powermoves, tutting, house dancing, freezes, routines and many more.

5. Beatboxing [Vocal percussion]

The art of beatboxing is truly a lost art. Not that it was ever really big to begin with but it’s easily forgotten when people talk about or think of Hip Hop. Beatboxing is making beats with your mouth. There’s many things you can incorporate with the beats your making like drums, singing, sound fx, instruments and whatever else but beatboxing is combining whatever mouth sounds your making to create beats in a rhythmic form. The influences come from skat jazz, tuscan throat singing, African music and all sorts of different cultures. I’ve always had a theory that poverty played a part in the creation of beatboxing in New York, If everybody had money for stereo’s and batteries they may have never had all the free time and reason to start making complex beats with they’re mouthes in the park. Some of the pioneer Hip Hop beatboxers are Doug E Fresh, Ready Rock C, The Human Beatbox [Fat Boys], Kenny Muhammad, Biz Markie, Scratch and Rahzel. With technology advancing at a fast rate beatboxing is going right along with it. We now have people using loopers, drum machines and fx machines to do everything imaginable with the human voice from looping and recording to pitch changing. Some of the beatbox looping is done with with people’s hands on a pad and some of the loopers are guitar peddle ones where you use your foot. There are national and international beatbox championships in most major countries around the world.

6. Production [Beat Making]

Without producers or beat makers rappers and hip hop as a culture would have no beats. Producers are the backbone of the hip hop songs we hear and the ones who create the beat, drums and music behind the vocals. A lot of the first rap beats were made with early synths and samplers like the SP 1200. The early days of rap beats consisted mostly of sampling a small loop from an old jazz/soul/funk record and adding some boom bap drums or percussion. This has remained the recipe for years and continues to be a classic way of creating that 80′s and 90′s rap sound. Some producers over the years evolved into composers and instrument players themselves and started creating original pieces of music from scratch with no samples at all. This may have had to do with all the costly and stressful law suits that were popping up all over Hip Hop due to sampling rights and licensing. Some of the main beat making programs/software/hardware used these days are Reason, Logic, Pro Tools, Ableton and MPC’s. With the expansion of rap as an industry production value and worth has sky rocketed. Modern day beats can be downloaded for free online by some aspiring artists who give them away for free, or you could also buy one song off a super producer for over a million dollars.

7. The Grind [Photographers, Graphic designers, Promoters, Managers]

“The grind” is basically all the behind the scene’s hard work in Hip Hop. Without managers or promoters putting on concerts and photographers documenting everything going on around us our lives would be very different. The Grind encompasses all the people that are essential to the advancement of our culture but there jobs don’t necessarily fall under the 4 elements that we started with. Website designers, graphic designers, clothing shops and companies, clubs, cafe’s and organizers can all be a part of Hip Hop. If the attitude, energy and love is evident there’s so many ways for people to contribute in this culture. There are a lot more types of people that go into making concerts, festivals, art shows and record labels happen then just artists and musicians. Were all part of the grind.

8. Character/ Style

You can learn every technical aspect of hip hop but if you don’t have your own soul, character and style you’ve got a long way to go. Originality is key in so many ways from keeping things fresh to constantly innovating and inspiring each other to take it to that next level in whatever we do. Back in the days if someone copied or stole a breakdance move or a rap you’d be called a “biter”. Over time that’s kinda faded out to a point where commercial rap music all sounds the same and a lot of artist’s will never take the chance to make something original or unique. Tapping into your own mind and soul to find your own character, style and path in music is the most important part of hip hop. You create your alias, tag or rap name name based off this character that you’ve grown into and created. Although a lot of the time it’s hard to break away from the norm and create something totally your own thats usually artist’s best works. Remember nobody is better at being you then yourself.
