Kevin Davies, Driftwood Artist
Like all artists I am influenced by other artists, viewing art and interacting with other creative people I find to be inspirational. In my work, you may recognize a connection with aboriginal art from many cultures. The primitive aspect, the comic ingredient, the whimsical suggestion, a social commentary and natural life energy are elements I am greatly attracted to.
I have worked with driftwood for some time now. The exploration begins with the faces and shapes presenting themselves to me right there on the beach. Each piece of driftwood suggests the form and appearance of the artwork and, as I work, the individual personalities emerge. Some are faces, some are fantasy creatures, some are fish.
Colour and balance are important to me as I try to convey the emerging profile of each figure in the context of our real world but with a presence in the mystic imaginings.
I enjoy working these pieces immensely. It is very fulfilling to create so many interesting characters. In addition to my driftwood art, I produce framed mosaics of butterflies using coloured paper as the medium. In my third line of work, I use old guitars to produce unique art pieces. One of these hangs above the entrance to Randy Bachman’s studio on Saltspring Island. The only drum I have worked with sits in Ringo Starr’s studio in Los Angeles.
